SAKURA SCIENCE EXCHANGE PROGRAM 2023: A JOURNEY OF ACADEMIC AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE IN JAPAN

From 11th -16th of December, 2023, 8 students from the University of Science – VNUHCM has participated in the Sakura Science Exchange Program (SSP) at Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU), Osaka, Japan. This program is fully sponsored by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Participants list of SSP 2023:

  • Luong Thien Tri – Fourth-year student, Faculty of Information Technology
  • Vo Ngoc Bich Huyen – Third-year student, Faculty of Biology – Biotechnology
  • Tran Dai Duong – Second-year student, Faculty of Chemistry 
  • Duong Hoai Ninh – Second-year student, Faculty of Chemistry

This is an annual international collaboration between the Environmental Department of the University of Science, VNUHCM, and Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan. The students had the opportunity to experience the academic environment in a developed country, gaining more specific insights into their future educational paths. This also serves as an excellent opportunity to explore the culture of another country and connect with international friends.

Through academic lectures by professors on research related to air pollution, particularly fine particulate matter (PM2.5), wastewater issues, and environmental improvement through bio-diesel, the participants engaged in enthusiastic discussions and gained valuable knowledge throughout the program.

The students also had the opportunity to visit advanced laboratories and meet professors from diverse fields such as Environmental Science, Informatic System, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Biology, and the Energy and Environment Laboratory. The professors shared insights with the students about the academic and research environment at Japan’s universities.

In addition to academic activities, students also immersed themselves in Japanese culture through fascinating experiences such as visiting Osaka Castle, the Kiyomizu Temple, the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living, the bustling street of Dotonbori, and Namba Central Park. At these locations, students had the chance to immerse themselves in everyday life, embracing the lively atmosphere of Osaka.

The Sakura Science Exchange Program has been and continues to be a valuable opportunity for the students of the University of Science, VNU – HCM. The program not only facilitates participants in broadening their knowledge but also assists them in exploring directions for scientific research and opportunities for postgraduate scholarships abroad.
